Mr International Rubber Weekend: A First-Timer's Guide

Mr International Rubber Weekend: A First-Timer's Guide

For its 30th edition, the rubber scene's contest weekend is heading back to Chicago. MIR (formerly Mr International Rubber) runs from Thursday, November 5 to Sunday, November 8, 2026, at the Marriott Chicago O'Hare, according to the organizer's schedule of events. And no, it isn't the Mister International pageant, or the industrial rubber companies that share the abbreviation.

According to Wikipedia's history of the contest, it started in 1997 as Mr. International Rubber and went gender-neutral as MIR in 2023, so winners now choose Mr., Ms., Mx. or MIR International Rubber Ambassador. At MIR29 in October 2025, Elliott Eve of Melbourne became the first Mx International Rubber, Windy City Times reported.

1

What draws a rubberist to rubber?

Some people who love the material call themselves rubberists, and Wikipedia's overview of rubber and PVC fetishism notes the scene has built clubs and contests much like the leather scene. A 2015 Queerspace Magazine feature on Mr International Rubber described a community that welcomes every body type, drawn partly by the look of the gear and partly by the people inside it.

Honestly? I think that second part gets undersold. Catsuits get the photos, yet a rubber club is a better first stop than the pictures suggest.

2

What actually happens at Mr International Rubber weekend?

More than the photo galleries suggest. Between the schedule and the organizer's tips for newcomers, you'll find:

  • Newbie Orientation on Friday and Saturday, the obvious first stop

  • a Kink Market with leather, rubber, neoprene and toy vendors, plus a Demo Pit whose staff are mainly there to keep people safe

  • the Chicago Rubber Club Gear Sale, gently used gear on consignment, with prices that may drop on Sunday

  • KinkEd classes and an art exhibition called "Second Skin"

  • the parts that matter most by day two: a Quiet Room, daily recovery meetings and a Saturday mocktail social

  • a Rubber Club Summit on Friday, and two contest nights

The tips page adds that it's 18+, and guests under 21 can't get into bars or alcohol venues. Per its accessibility page, the organizer says its hotel venues are fully accessible, with ASL interpretation for classes and the contest.

3

Do you need rubber gear to go?

No. The tips page says there's no dress code at most MIR events, and people turn up in full rubber, full leather or jeans and t-shirts. It even suggests track pants and a jacket over your gear between venues.

Latex and your skin

DermNet (reviewed November 2024) separates an immediate reaction, itching and swelling usually within minutes, from a delayed, itchy, scaly rash that can take days to appear. A June 2026 review in Postępy Dermatologii i Alergologii adds that delayed contact dermatitis typically appears 24 to 48 hours after exposure, triggered by chemicals added during manufacturing rather than latex proteins. Feeling fine on Saturday night proves less than you'd think.

None of this is medical advice. If you know or suspect a latex reaction, see a doctor or dermatologist before you go; breathing trouble or facial swelling needs emergency help.

Latex care basics

Latex care is fussier than it looks. A UK maker's care guide from Murray and Vern says latex should stay away from sunlight, heat and humidity, and that body lotions, perfumes and oils will damage it on contact. For polish it points to a silicone shiner and nothing oil-based. So if you pick up a shine spray like the Pflegespray „Latex-Glanz-Spray“, check that the label says silicone first.

Once you've read the skin section above, a dressing aid like the Latex-Anziehhilfe „CULT Dressing Aid“ für Fetisch-Outfits is worth knowing about, because tight rubber gear can be a wrestle to get into. Long latex stockings like the Strümpfe aus Latex, lang are one way to find out whether you like the feel at all, provided nothing in that skin section rings a bell.

Gear etiquette: ask first

Somebody's rubber gear is part of their body space, however much it shines. Ask before you touch it. Photos need a yes too. Don't read anyone's role or identity off their outfit, and say no as plainly as you'd want to hear it. If you want a shared vocabulary for that, our guide to safewords and clear BDSM communication is a good start.

That's general etiquette for kink events, not a quote from MIR's rules; the organizer asks attendees to read its Code of Conduct before arriving. Our BDSM play party etiquette guide and the piece on enthusiastic consent in kink cover how asking works in practice.

Rubber and leather scenes have long run in parallel, and our Amsterdam Leather Pride 2026 piece covers another kink event on the leather side. Rubber just squeaks more.

Before you book a flight to Mr International Rubber, check the dates and venue on mirubber.com and register there, because that's the page that counts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is MIR the same as the Mister International pageant?

No. MIR, formerly Mr International Rubber, is a contest and community weekend for the rubber and fetish scene. Mister International is an unrelated pageant, and industrial companies that share the abbreviation have nothing to do with it either.

Do I need to own rubber gear to attend MIR30?

No. The organizer's newcomer tips say there's no dress code at most MIR events, and people turn up in full rubber, full leather or jeans and a t-shirt. If you want to try rubber gear, the Chicago Rubber Club Gear Sale offers gently used pieces on consignment.

Who can attend the weekend?

Adults 18 and over, according to the organizer's tips page, and guests under 21 can't enter bars or alcohol venues. Check the dates and venue on mirubber.com, and register there, before you book anything.

Can a latex reaction show up after the weekend?

Yes. DermNet describes delayed reactions that develop over days, and a 2026 review puts typical delayed contact dermatitis at 24 to 48 hours after exposure. This is general information, not medical advice, so see a doctor or dermatologist about any rash.

Is it okay to touch someone's rubber gear?

Not without asking. Gear is part of a person's body space, so the general community norm is to ask first, every time, and to ask before taking photos too. The organizer also asks attendees to read its Code of Conduct before arriving.
